About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: As our forests and agricultural lands are replaced with impervious surfaces due to urban development, stormwater management has become a major concern. Establishing vegetation on rooftops, known as green roofs, is one method of managing stormwater runoff. Vegetated green roofs not only reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, they also extended runoff duration beyond the actual rain event. Pictured are the green roof research platforms at Michigan State University. See Van Woert et al., "Green Roof Stormwater Retention: Effects of Roof Surface, Slope, and Media Depth." p. 1036-1044 Photo by Bradley Rowe, Michigan State University.
