Edited by E.G. Gregorich, L.W. Turchenek, M.R. Carter, and D.A. Angers, CRC Press, 2000 N.W. Corporate Blvd, Boca Raton, FL 33431. 2001. 577 p. ISBN 0-8493-3115-3.

Many of the soil and environmental issues that scientists, environmental regulators, or policymakers address today require the concerted efforts of multidisciplinary teams. As we collaborate and communicate with our colleagues in neighboring fields, it is not uncommon to come across terminologies or phrases that we are not familiar with. I therefore congratulate the editors of the Soil and Environmental Science Dictionary for compiling this valuable reference tool, which I am sure will find favor with many who work in the greater soil and environmental sciences field.

The dictionary provides clear and concise definitions for more than 4000 terms in a traditional dictionary format. These terms cover a wide range of disciplines, including soil science, agronomy, botany, geology, geography, plant science, forestry, biochemistry, ecology, microbiology, zoology, conservation, environmental chemicals, engineering, hydrology, meteorology, geochemistry, waste management, chemistry, physics, modeling, and statistics. Terminologies relating to soil classifications in the U.S. Taxonomy and the Canadian Soil Classification System are also included. The editors have successively provided a good coverage of relevant terms of the various disciplines without making the dictionary too voluminous. Another important and unique feature of this dictionary is that the French term that is equivalent to the English term is also given following the definition of the term. There is extensive cross-referencing of related terms. There are also many clear illustrations to aid in the understanding of the definitions. At the end of the dictionary, all the terms are indexed according to discipline and subject area in both English and French, to enable the reader to determine if a term from a particular field is defined. Several useful appendices provide information on SI units, soil classification, and soil structural and textural properties.

This dictionary should serve as a valuable reference for anyone who deals with multi-disciplinary soil and environmental issues: scientists, students, teachers, environmental managers, regulators, consultants, and policymakers.
