ABSTRACT
Five surface soils from southeastern Montana were studied to determine the effects of autoclaving and glucose additions on the volatile loss of applied divalent inorganic mercury.
Soils were amended to 1 ppm Hg as 203Hg-Hg(NO3)2, maintained at room temperature near the 1/3-bar moisture content, and Hg content monitored for 7 weeks. Mercury losses from soils receiving neither autoclaving or glucose additions ranged from 5 to 30%. In general, autoclaving reduced the total quantity of Hg lost, while glucose additions increased the initial loss rate of applied Hg.
