ABSTRACT

A model of a set of integrated lysimeters used to study radionuclide transport and uptake in vegetated soils is described. The experimental facility is conceptualized as a network of linked compartments. Observed water fluxes provide the basis for simulating the movement and distribution of radionuclides throughout the entire experimental system. The model incorporates a simplified representation of upward migration of radionuclides into an unsaturated soil followed by leaching. The transfer of radionuclides from the soil to the crop is represented using a dynamic root uptake submodel. The application of the lysimeter system model to data for the radionuclide 22Na is presented in an accompanying paper.
