Lead Migration in Some Acid Forest Soils under Beech in Greece

ABSTRACT

The ratio of Pb concentrations in A and H horizons (relative migration ratio or RMR) of acid forest soils under beech in Greece was determined and assumed as an index of potential Pb migration. The pH of the A horizon was the only factor studied that significantly and negatively correlated with RMR. Decreasing solubility of organic matter in the A horizon is a possible cause for this correlation. The E4/E6 ratio (absorbance at 465 nm/absorbance at 665 nm) in water extracts from H horizon did not affect RMR, suggesting that soluble organic matter of low molecular weight derived from humic layers could not significantly cause Pb leaching from the A horizon.
