Toward Environmental Sanity

ABSTRACT

Growing national demand for environmental controls led to establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency which is charged with planning and executing an integrated, coordinated attack on environmental problems of air and water pollution, drinking water quality, solid wastes management, pesticides, radiation, and noise. Other Federal agencies also play a part in environmental control. A strong EPA regional organization has been established. Progress is being made toward pollution control in a number of areas but much, much more remains to be done. One emphasis of EPA program is on research and demonstration to combat present problems and to help anticipate future problems. Pollution control standards and laws must be enforced energetically or little will be gained. Continued public support of national, state, and local environmental control programs is basic to success.
